Winchester

The .30-30 Winchester was the first American small bore, smokeless powder sporting cartridge. It was designed and marketed in early 1895 in the Model 94 lever action rifle. The original loading used a 160 grain soft point bullet and 30 grains of smokeless propellant. Muzzle velocities approached 2000 FPS. Winchester later adapted the Model 54 bolt action to handle the .30-30.

Always popular, the .30-30 has become the yardstick by which all deer cartridges are measured. It continues to thrive in spite of a good deal of press labeling it as outdated. The .3030 is capable of excellent accuracy. The developments in smokeless propellants during the last 100 years have improved the performance of the .30-30.

Only blunt or flat nosed bullets must be used in rifles with tubular magazines.

The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .30-30 Winchester is 42,000 P.S.I. and 38,000 C.U.P.

Hunting Mastery Selected Tips
