Dropped Position

In order to move the hammer from full ccx'k to the dropped position, the trigger must be depressed during the entire forward travel of the hammer. Note that WHEN THE TRIGGER IS DEPRESSED, THE HALF COCK NOTCH WILL NOT CATCH THE HAMMER IF IT SHOULD ACCIDENTALLY SLIP DURING THIS OPERATION. Therefore, a wise practice to follow is to place the point of the thumb in the "V" between the hammer and the firing pin so that it can act as a cushion against accidental hammer fall (see Figure 6). Pull the Follower Past the Loading Port is mounted on the rifle, it is necessary to insert the point of the thumb more from the side. A little practice with an empty rifle will enable a person to become quite adept at using the thumb in this manner.
