The tilting lid pit is auhstantiallv the same type of trap es the spike board pit described on page 75. The major different*** are that it is m«ch larger <aboul 13 feet squurc by f! feet deep* and has a pivoting lid. The lid ia supported in the middle by an axle; when tacked in position it is strong enough to support a man's weight. When the lid is not locked, it pivots when a man steps on it and the man drops into the pit onto the boards with spikes that cover the bottom. Thr Jin, which is counterbalanced, then swings back to ils original position. Because of the pit's depth, the walls are shored up with hoard* or lugs to prevent cove-ins*
