By making measurements of the rifling angle at intervals of 0.2 inch throughout the entire length of a barrel, data were obtained which made it possible to make graphs or plots which show the rate of change of the rifting angle. This was done for all the barrels that were in sufficiently good condition to measure, and it was found that the plots fell into six general types, as shown in the graphs.

In Type I the rifling angle increases regularly from breech to muzzle. This was the type most often encountered.

In Type II the angle increases fairly regularly at first then more rapidly toward the muzzle.
