No cases are known to the author where this practice, quite common for legitimate purposes when barrels become badly worn, has been used to conceal a crime. However the possibility exists. The fact that such an operation has been performed is readily revealed by an examination of the muzzle of the gun which will clearly show a ring of demarcation between the metal of the liner and that of the original barrel. Finding barrels which have such liners, however, is not prima facie evidence that they have been relined. The .22 caliber Derringer now being made in Germany and recently introduced into the U.S. has liners or inserts in the barrels.
