Ammunition especially designed for use in revolvers or for use in automatic pistols can be fired in rifles (or shotguns) by the use of adapters or supplemental chambers. The principal manufacturers of these in the United States have been the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. and the Marble Arms and Manufacturing Co. They have been produced in great variety, the Marble Co. listing as many as twenty-three.
Table 13 shows a number of cartridges and the various rifles in which they may be fired by the use of adapters.
Examiners to whom fired revolver type and automatic pistol type bullets are submitted should always keep in mind that the evidence bullets may have been fired from rifles. And a .22 caliber fired bullet bearing no rifling marks may have been fired from a shotgun by using an adapter designed for such use.
