„Round ball" ammunition is available and because of the short area of contact of the ball with the rifling such bullets do not acquire well-defined rifling marks such as are found on the modern elongated projectile. Such bullets would doubtless spell a lot of trouble for firearms examiners if they were commonly used. Lead balls of from .25 to .50 caliber are easily obtained and can be handloaded by anyone familiar with the process. Cartridges provided with lead balls and reduced loads are also purchasable. They are used for gallery practice or for shooting small animals. However, they have sufficient power to be lethal at short range. Fortunately they are seldom used by the criminal.
