of female friends who've been forced into minor off-roading while wearing Guccis have stated they would rather go barefoot.)

The stock is also well-designed, with a wide, flat fore-end that includes two sling swivel studs, so one can be used for a sling and the other to attach a bipod. Between the weight and the studs, this is obviously a "walking varminter," though equally good for shooting off rests. The stock is of course synthetic, mostly of an olive-green hue with what Remington calls "black overmold grips" on the pistol grip and just behind the flat of the fore-end, as well as a cheekpiece, and a black butt pad. There are also vents in the front half of the fore-end to (at least in theory) help the barrel cool off more quickly. Hey, anything helps on a 95-degree afternoon.

The barrel is only 22" long overall, and the porting reduces the actual breech-to-crown length to 20". This might seem a little short for such relatively high-intensity cartridges as the .204 Ruger, .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester, the initial chamberings of the VTR. The .204 has as large a powder-to-bore ratio as any of these, and handloads and factory loads did lose around 200 fps compared to 24" barrels. Still, one of the rifle's favorite handloads features the 26-grain Barnes Varmint Grenade at around 4,200 fps, definite .204-type velocity. In the field, I never did notice the loss of velocity, even with heavier bullets, perhaps because a lot of the shooting was done at elevations of 5,000' or more. In fact, on both shoots the rifle managed hits at 600+ yards, in part thanks to fairly calm breezes — at least for Montana and Wyoming.

I've also shot VTRs in .223 Remington and .308 Winchester, and both were also very accurate. The triangular barrel works, as does everything else on the VTR. rr~l

Is there any chance an ammo maker will make a good hunting bullet for the .223 of 70 to 75 grains? Surely I am not the only person who chose to get a 1:8" twist for heavier bullets to take feral hogs, deer and those long shots on coyotes when it's a little windy. Something with a ballistic tip would be nice. I think the ammo makers are missing a good bet here.

Wilkerson via e-mail

A! Barnes Bullets makes an all-copper .224" TSX boattail in heavy weights including a 62 and a 70 grainer for bigger game. If you want to give the 62-grain ammo a try, CorBon (1311 Industry Rd, Sturgis, South Dakota, 57785, 800/626-7266, www.corbon.com) loads it in their DPX line of ammunition.

If you really want the heavy bullet, a custom loader such as Superior Ammunition, (20788 Mossy Oak Place, Sturgis, SD 57785, 800/677-8737, www.superiorammo.com) or Custom Cartridge, (5878 Hollister Ave, Goleta, CA 93117, 805/967-1138, www. customcartridge.com) is just the ticket. Prices range north or south of $40 a box for the custom stuff, not unreasonable considering these are premium hunting rounds. fTTI

Fired from a DPMS 16" AR-15, the CorBon 62-grain DPX using Barnes TSX bullet delivered2,693 fps. Penetration in ballistic gelatin with a 4-layer denim barrier in front was 17". The recovered diameter was .49" and the recovered weight was still 62 grains.
