Effect of Environmental Temperature on Bullet Velocity

Environmental temperature can significantly effect the velocity of a bullet. In tests conducted by the military using M-16 rifles, two rifles, having a rifling twist of 1:12, lost 167 ft/sec and 109 ft/sec, respectively, in muzzle velocity when the environmental temperature was decreased from 70°F to 0°F.29 Table 10.3 shows the results of the experiment with the two rifles at different temperatures.
