ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OPERATION

M242 Worm Gear
Figure 2. M242 Gun Electrical System Block Diagram.

The electrical system consists of the direct current motor, electrical sear solenoid, electrical feed select solenoid, and index drive cable assembly. See Figures 3 and 4 for the electrical wiring diagrams. Component functions are:

a. DIRECT CURRENT MOTOR: Operates on voltages between 18 and 30 Vdc and drives the auto gun receiver and automatic gun feeder gears. Contains junction and connectors for interface between auto gun receiver and automatic gun feeder. The enhanced gun motor contains a jumper wire that enables on-vehicle BIT.

b. ELECTRICAL SEAR SOLENOID: Controls sear by moving release link and sear push rod.

c. ELECTRICAL FEED SELECT SOLENOID: Provides manual and electrical selection of AP or HE ammunition. Sends an electrical signal to the control panel to indicate ammunition selection. Contains connector for interface between automatic gun feeder and auto gun receiver. The enhanced gun solenoid contains a jumper wire to enable on-vehicle BIT.

d. INDEX DRIVE CABLE ASSEMBLY: Provides sensing of the bolt position through a series of three microswitches. Sends electrical signals through the electrical feed select solenoid cable to the control box and control panel to provide the necessary control and indication functions (normal shutdown, seared, or breech locked).
