Worm shaft gear and bevel gear are parts of a serialized, matched set. Both gears must be replaced if either part is defective.

Index drive shaft and index drive assembly are parts of a serialized, matched set. Both parts must be replaced if either part is defective.

1. INSPECT WORM SHAFT ASSEMBLY COMPONENTS.

a. Visually inspect worm shaft (1) and bevel gear (2) for wear, cracks, broken teeth, and stripped threads. If any of these conditions are found, replace defective part.

b. Visually inspect worm shaft nut (3), retaining ring (4), rod (5), and machine key (6) for cracks and breaks. If either of these conditions are found, replace defective part.

c. Hold ball bearing (7) by outer ring. Rotate inner ring and check for binding and rough movement. If either of these conditions are found, replace defective part.

2. INSPECT ACCESS COVER.

a. Visually inspect access cover (8) for cracks and breaks. If either of these conditions are found, replace access cover.

3. INSPECT SHOULDERED SHAFT SECTION COMPONENTS.

a. Visually inspect lower and upper sliding sleeve clutch assemblies (9) and (10) for broken dog clutches, broken or missing springs, and cracked or chipped clutches. If any of these conditions are found, refer to WP 0075 00.

b. Visually inspect spur gears (11) and (12), shouldered shafts (13) and (14), and worm wheel gear (15) for broken gear teeth or splines. If either of these conditions are found, replace defective part.

INSPECTION - Continued c. Visually inspect gear clutch assembly (16) for cracks, broken gear teeth, or damaged splines. If any of these conditions are found, replace gear clutch assembly.
