Postmortem

After careful consideration, we have decided that it will very likely be better to hold our own postmortem here and now, rather than have an autopsy surgeon do it for us later on.

The first thing to realize is that no one becomes an expert by reading a book. For instance, the dictionary contains all the words with full instructions for their use, yet few people would consider that study of the dictionary would make orators of them. Any art requires practice—which gives experience. I well remember that one of my early experiments resulted in the burying of a #6^2 primer three inchcs beneath the point of my collar-bone, where it still reposes, in peace, I hope. At any rate, the surgeon doubted his ability to follow with a scalpel the track of that primer past those large veins and arteries without touching them as the primer luckily had done, so he advised that it be left there. It gave me a chill to think what might have happened if that primer had chosen my eye for a path, rather than my chest.
