With the loop sling donned, the handguard of the rifle rests in the "V" formed by the thumb and index finger of the left hand. The rifle rests across the heel of the hand. The left elbow should be positioned under the weapon to create bone support and a consistent resistance to recoil. The fingers can curl around the hand-guard, but should apply only the minimum amount of pressure to prevent the hand from slipping on the handguard. See figure 5-11.
