5.56mm BERETTA AR 70

In the late 1960s Beretta began work on updating the Italian Army's 7.62mm BM 59. They evaluated the leading rifles of the time, hoping to blend their best features with their own innovations to produce a world-beater. Their design appeared in 1970, giving the weapon its name — the Beretta Model 70. The weapon is gas operated but carries no gas regulator. The gas port is placed close to the muzzle end of the barrel, requiring a long piston which is also above it. This raises the centre of gravity of the weapon and. with the magazine below it, the balance and handling characteristics are enhanced. The bolt is forward-locking and the trigger system is simple and clean. The rifle is easily stripped and is available in three versions: the principal type is the assault rifle AR 70 with its high-impact rigid plastic stock with steel butt plate: the Special Troops Carbine or SC 70 is the folding stock version: and the third is a shortened SC 70. The rifle is favoured by Italian special forces and Air Force.

5.56mm IMI GALIL

This assault rifle — based primarily on the Soviet Kalashnikov — was first issued in 1973 and now has a rich battle-tested heritage. It was noticed in Israel that if the receiver of the Finnish Valmet M62 was used with a stout barrel the system would serve for both 5.56mm and 7.62mm rounds. Each of the three forms of Galil is therefore available in 5.56mm and 7.62mm versions. The rifle has a rotating bolt gas system and, with the exception of the stamped steel breech cover, is fully machined. The wooden foregrip is lined with Dural and has ample clearance around the barrel for heat dissipation. The three forms are: the assault rifle, fitted with a folding metal stock; the short assault rifle with a shortened barrel; and the assault rifle/light machine gun which has a bipod, carrying handle, and can project a variety of

grenades. The trigger and firing mechanisms are those of the M1 Garand, AK series and others. The normal 5.56mm magazine contains 35 rounds, that of the 7.62mm only 25; there is, however, also a 50-round magazine for use as a light machine gun. The sights give aimed fire out to 500m. A unique and particularly impressive feature is the set of folding night sights which use tritium for illumination; for close quarter work at night — perhaps on border patrols — these sights are undetectable. The Galil was

adopted by South Africa after the incorporation of modifications such as a carbon plastic stock instead of steel tubing. There it is known as the R4 (Rifle 4) and has proved itself in service with the South African Defence Force in harsh combat terrain in Angola and South West Africa against the combined forces of FA PL A/Cuba and SWAPO.
